Credit for Prior Learning

Turn life experience into course credit

Credit for prior learning (CPL), also called prior learning assessment, is a process that allows certain students to gain credit for learning acquired through their life experiences.

Qualifying experiences could be from work experience; military service; non-credit college courses; independent certifications; or civic, community and volunteer work.

  • Faster time to degree completion
  • Cost-effective
  • Degree completion at higher rates than for students without credit for prior learning

Credit for Prior Learning is available to new, current and transfer students who:

  1. Are currently enrolled at MCTC and plan to complete a degree, diploma or certificate
  2. Hold good academic standing
  3. Have not previously taken the course or currently enrolled in the course
  4. Use this checklist as a guide when discussing with your advisor or instructor.

Programs and Certifications

Below are examples of national standardized exams, local exams, or certification that may be applied to a credit for prior learning credit. Visit the Credit Evaluation page for detailed information on each of these options.

The evaluation costs $77 per credit and is a non-refundable fee paid prior to the assessment.
