This course introduces concepts of basic human needs, health/illness continuum and basic nursing skills in long term care and the home care environment. Skills are taught in a simulated laboratory setting utilizing demonstration and role-playing.

Upon successful completion of classroom studies, the student will participate in 24 hours of supervised clinical experience in a long-term care facility. (Clinicals dates and times arranged by instructor.)

Students completing the full course, including clinical experience, will be registered for Nursing Assistant Test Out (NATO). Successful candidates are placed on the Minnesota Department of Health Nursing Assistant Registry. 

This course meets the objectives of the Federal Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA) and Minnesota Department of Health Requirements as detailed for educating the nursing assistant.

Requirements

You must complete the following before participating in clinicals:

  • Clear Minnesota Department of Human Services background study
  • Provide documentation of a recent health examination
  • Provide documentation of a TB test
  • Provide proof of MMR vaccination
