“Working behind the scenes throughout the year was work study student and 2020 graduate Kiann Nguyen,” said Kristine Gyolai, dean of Design and the Arts.

Gyolai notes Kiann was the driving force behind promoting the creative work of students across programs as well as being an instrumental force behind the apparel design virtual showcase PDF.

Kiann enrolled in Minneapolis College for its affordability and flexible schedule and found herself in the area of Graphic Design and Print Media because it offered her a creative outlet with a strong career path.

“There were many benefits of being in the program, including the small class sizes which offered an opportunity for me to connect closely with students and faculty,” said Kiann.

“The highlight of my student career, however, was working alongside Kristine as the School of Design and the Arts intern. I found myself building my own portfolio while promoting the work of the students and the department.” Kiann collaborated across departments creating brochures, tickets, invitations, advertisements, programs and an array of other promotional materials.

As Kiann prepared for graduation, she pulled together her own portfolio in addition to supporting the work of students and the department.

“Every student receives feedback on their final portfolio from industry professionals,” said faculty member Kjrsten Holt, who noted comments on Kiann’s work complimented her mix of imagery and typography, and how rare it is to see a student who shows strengths as an illustrator and a designer. Her work is representative of the strength and creativity of all of our graduates.”
