Subtitle

Weather Emergency Closing or Cancellation Policy

Body

Part 1. Purpose

In accordance with Minnesota State Board of Trustees Policy 4.4, the following policy and its procedure are followed when it becomes necessary to close the College, cancel academic or non-academic activities, or delay the opening of the College due to inclement weather or other emergency conditions. The procedure also describes working conditions and the compensation status of employees during the time the College is closed.

Part 2. Definitions

Closing the College: Closing the College means closing all operations at all sites. Closing the College results in the cancellation of classes, student, faculty, and staff activities and meetings. All general offices are closed. In the event that it is necessary for certain employees to come to any college campus for purposes of protecting life and/or property or to prepare the campus for reopening, those employees will be brought in according to relevant contract or employee agreement provisions.

Delayed Opening: Delayed opening refers to the closing of all operations for a designated period of time.

Cancellation of Classes and/or Activities:

  • Cancellation of classes (off campus or on campus) means to cancel one, several, or all classes, in the absence of officially closing the entire College.
  • Cancellation of non-academic activities refers to the cancellation of an event such as athletic events, theatrical productions, concerts, or workshops.

Part 3. Authority

In accordance with Minnesota State Board of Trustees Policy 4.4, the authority to close the College campus, cancel classes, or other activities when a weather emergency exists resides with the College President or the President's designee. The closure of state agencies by the Commissioner of the Department of Employee Relations does not apply to Minneapolis College. If the Governor or the Commissioner of Employee Relations closes all other state agencies, the College will also close. If the Governor or Commissioner of Employee Relations closes only certain agencies but not all agencies, the College will make an independent decision.
