Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered and conversational method of communication designed to assist helping professionals address clients' ambivalence to change. MI is recognized as a core component of a variety of interventions used by service providers, including those in substance abuse/addiction services, mental health, primary healthcare, education, and criminal justice.

Using Motivational Interviewing increases client engagement in the change process, reinforces client self-motivation, improves retention and completion rates, and contributes to better outcomes. According to the Center for Evidence-Based Practices, MI helps people resolve their ambivalence about making meaningful personal changes in their lives by identifying their readiness, willingness, and ability to make the change.

MCTC has trained more than 4,000 professionals in Motivational Interviewing throughout Minnesota, and we offer beginning, intermediate, and advanced training for individuals and organizations to effectively utilize the technique. MI training will help you to:

  • Develop unique listening and interviewing skills
  • Identify and explore client ambivalence
  • Respond to resistance
  • Elicit and strengthen client change-talk
  • Enhance client confidence in taking action and encourage commitment to change

Our MI training was developed specifically to meet CEU requirements for alcohol and drug counselors, social workers, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, crisis counselors, nursing and allied health professionals.
