Language Learning Center

Providing world language instruction to foster connections and build understanding in our global community.

There are more than 6,000 languages spoken across the globe, and nearly as many reasons for studying a foreign language today. Learning a new language is a fun way to exercise your brain and broaden your horizons. Language skills bring more opportunities for cross-cultural understanding, and can be a real advantage in your career, too.

Are you planning to travel outside of the U.S. for business or pleasure? Having some knowledge of the local language can help you communicate with local residents, venture beyond typical tourist areas, and add a new dimension to your experience. If you travel for work or regularly interact with clients for whom English is not a first language, you can foster goodwill, build stronger relationships, and improve your employment potential by studying another language.

Even if you're not planning to leave the Twin Cities, there are plenty of great reasons to learn some new language skills.

Do you have relatives who speak a language other than English? In our diverse country, many of us are descendants of non-native English speakers or immigrants ourselves. Language study can help you gain a greater understanding of your personal or familial history and culture, and build connections between past, present, and future generations.

Would you like to better engage with your neighbors and local community? Minneapolis is home to the largest Somali community in the U.S., and Latinos are the fastest growing population in Minnesota. Learning a new language increases your cultural understanding and ability to relate to people from different backgrounds than your own. Try a beginner's class in Spanish, Oromo, or Somali, and see your city in a new way!

MCTC’s Language Learning Center offers a wide array of language classes in a short-term, noncredit format, open to anyone with an interest. Our classes combine a solid academic approach with an easy-going and engaging environment, taught by fluent instructors passionate about sharing their love of language learning.
