Continuing Education and Workforce Development

“I have been taking Beginning French for eight months. I have always struggled with foreign languages, especially now that I cannot hear as well as when I was younger, but I have learned more French than any of the other three foreign languages I tried. Bravo!!”

–Thomas Detwiler, MCTC Continuing Education French Student

"I chose to teach at MCTC because of the institutions reputation of higher learning, as well as the diversity of its students."

–Dahir Nur, MCTC Continuing Education Somali Instructor

Language Learning Programs

Providing world language instruction to foster connections and build understanding in our global community.

The reasons for studying a foreign language are nearly as numerous as the number of languages spoken across the globe. At MCTC, one of the most diverse colleges in Minnesota, many languages and dialects are spoken by its student body. MCTC’s Language Learning Center offers a wide array of language classes, in a short-term, noncredit format, open to anyone with an interest. Our classes combine a solid academic approach with an easy-going, engaging environment, taught by fluent instructors passionate about sharing their love of language learning.

Just a few reasons for studying a foreign language:

  • Travel: One of the most common reasons students seek to learn a new language is to prepare for travel, whether for business or travel, in a foreign country. Having some language ability before traveling can help you venture beyond typical tourist areas and add a new dimension to your experience.
  • Work: You might be traveling to another country for business reasons, or have the need to interact with clients at home for whom English is not a first language. You can foster goodwill, build stronger relationships and improve your employment potential by studying another language.
  • Connection with your roots: Perhaps you have relatives who speak a language other than English, and in our nation of immigrants, most of us are descended from speakers of a foreign tongue. Language study will help you gain a greater understanding of your own history and culture, and build connections between past, present, and future generations.
  • Increase your cultural understanding: Whether you have interests in food, film, art, music, history, religion – your knowledge of any of them will be enhanced by learning a foreign language by helping you understand the global context and native tongue of your interests.

MCTC offers classes in the following world languages:

  • Afaan Oromo
  • American Sign Language
  • Arabic
  • Brazilian Portuguese
  • Chinese
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Norwegian
  • Somali
