The Power of YOU (POY)

We make your dream of attending college a possibility. POY will cover the cost of tuition and fees for two years or up to 72 attempted credits at Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) through state and federal grants and private scholarships. Students have the opportunity to earn incentives which can assist with the cost of books, transportation and meal cards.

The Power of YOU supports as many students as possible based on student need and funds available.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Graduate from a Minneapolis, St. Paul or surrounding Suburban Public/Charter/Alternative or Private High School in Spring 2018
  • Meet the criteria to apply for Federal Financial Aid and complete the financial aid package by going to www.fafsa.ed.gov MCTC’s School Code: 002362
  • Meet the family (student and parents) adjusted gross income cap of $75,000
  • Take REQUIRED Accuplacer assessment tests and score above Adult Basic Education (ABE) in Reading and Math

Power of YOU Support Services

  • All POY students are assigned an advisor that will coach and assist them in navigating through their higher education journey at MCTC.
  • All POY students are required to complete 4 Student Success Seminars each semester. The seminars are designed to support our students in college and life. Our goal is to assist you in developing positive relationships with your peers, MCTC Faculty and Staff and Community Based Organizations.
  • All POY students are required to complete 10 hours of Community Service/Civic Engagement per semester. The goal is to learn about your community and develop skills that will assist you in networking, communication and career exploration.
  • Enroll as a full-time student (12-15 credits each semester)
  • Maintain 2.5 grade point average each semester
  • Attend classes on time daily
  • Meet with POY Advisor three times each semester
  • Complete 10 hours of Community Service each semester
  • Complete 2 Student Success Seminars each semester
  • Complete Professor Feedback forms BEFORE mid-terms each semester
  • Maintain continued enrollment each semester (students must register for and attend classes EVERY Fall & Spring semester)

MCTC Power of YOU Application Process

Priority Deadline: March 28th, 2018

Deadline: April 25th, 2018

Apply to the Power of YOU program by going online and completing the form.

Complete the Accuplacer assessment exam in all three subjects: Math, Reading, and Writing. Testing at MCTC is available on a walk-in basis, no appointment is necessary.

Submit the 2018-2019 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and complete the entire financial aid process. Apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. FAFSA School Code for MCTC is 002362.

In approximately two weeks, check your email for any financial aid related notifications from MCTC. If you have to provide additional information, login to eServices to track your financial aid process.

  • How to login to your eServices student account:
    • Go to www.minneapolis.edu
    • Hover over the Current Students tab
    • Click on the eServices tab
    • Login with your STAR ID and Password
    • Click in the Financial Aid tab on the left-hand side of the screen and you will see the status of your FAFSA
    • Make sure you select the Fall 2018 term

Once all required materials are submitted and completed, your application will be reviewed and considered for participation in the Power of YOU program.

If you are selected to participate you will receive an email invitation on May 25, 2018. Once invited to participate in a Power of YOU Orientation, please follow these steps:

  • Attend the Power of YOU orientation on the date you selected
  • Bring a copy of your High School Diploma

If you are not selected to participate you will receive a letter of decline by June 4th, 2018.

Applicants must complete all of these steps to be considered and accepted into the Power of YOU program.
