MCTC Student, Staff and Community Partner Recognized for Community Engagement

Minnesota Campus Compact’s 2016 Presidents’ Awards recognizes Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) student Felicia Hamilton, staff member Curt Schmidt, and community partner VJ Smith for community engagement. Minnesota Campus Compact is a coalition of 37 college and university presidents dedicated to integrate civic engagement in every student’s post-secondary experience.

Felicia Hamilton, is one of 26 students selected in Minnesota for the Presidents’ Student Leadership Award. The award recognizes students or student organizations that show innovative and collaborative approaches to address public issues. Felicia worked with MCTC Public Safety Office, the student body, and campus members to discuss campus safety and well-being as a shared responsibility.

Curt Schmidt, Director of MCTC Public Safety Office, will receive the Presidents’ Civic Engagement Steward Award. The award is given to campus faculty, staff or administration that create strong community partnerships or support the work of other’s community engagement. Curt was recognized for his proactive work in reaching out to student and campus groups to promote campus safety. His approach to campus policing has been built on respect, trust and understanding.

Community partner and National Director of MAD DADS, VJ Smith, will be awarded Community Partner Award. VJ is one of 24 selected Minnesota community members or organizations that are recognized for their efforts to enhance the quality of life in the community in meaningful way and developed or sustained partnerships with local colleges or universities.

Minnesota Campus Compact will present the awards on April 7, 2016 at Macalester College.
