About the play
In his play, The Madwoman of Chaillot, the great French writer, Jean Giraudoux, has created a poetic and comic fable in which a group of exceedingly wealthy men plot to tear up Paris in order to unearth oil they believe lies in abundance beneath the streets to enlarge their already bloated fortunes. These grandiose plans come to the attention of The Madwoman of Chaillot, who, along with a collection of outrageous, colorful and eccentric characters, hatch an ingenious, amusing plan to combat the destruction of their neighborhoods, which plays out in an elegantly written, richly layered plot, wildly clever and surprising, with joy, justice, and love hanging in the balance. First performed in 1948, this highly entertaining play’s message is as relevant to our world as if it were ripped from today’s headlines.
