State and local officials have completed final details for the $7 million West Broadway Education and Career Center in North Minneapolis.

The Minneapolis City Council today approved funding and other project details that will enable developer Sherman Associates to proceed with building the center in a vacant 47,000 square foot building at 800 West Broadway Ave.

The two-story facility will include a new DEED North Minneapolis WorkForce Center, educational services offered by Minneapolis Public Schools, Minneapolis Community & Technical College and Minnesota State University Mankato, and a NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center. A retail component also is planned.

The new facility, which is expected to serve 25,000 customers a year, is scheduled to open next fall.

“The Education and Career Center is an exciting, unique model, offering customers educational, career and wellness services all under one roof,” said Commissioner Katie Clark Sieben of MN DEED. “Thanks to input and guidance from the North Minneapolis community and our many partners in this project, the Center is well designed to connect Minnesotans to new opportunities."

The DEED component of the project—the North Minneapolis WorkForce Center—will offer such free services as job search assistance, career counseling and exploration, classes and workshops and job clubs.

DEED has nearly 50 Minnesota workforce centers throughout the state that work to connect job seekers with valuable resources. The North Minneapolis center will offer customers access to educational and health services on-site.

Officials envision the center becoming a neighborhood resource that will contribute to increased high school graduation and GED attainment rates, higher post-secondary enrollment and college graduation rates, and improved job placement and career advancement.

As part of the ongoing planning process for the new center, monthly community engagement meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month (with the exception of November) from 8 to 9 a.m. at the current North Minneapolis Workforce Center, 1200 Plymouth Ave. N.
