Resources for Veterans

Veterans Upward Bound student Tyler La Roue achieves success through VUB.This Veterans Day marks a notable anniversary for the Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) program. VUB celebrates the 40th anniversary of the program that was started to help returning Vietnam veterans who did not have a high school diploma transition.

VUB is a full-service, federally funded TRIO program designed to prepare veterans for college by offering free college prep courses in writing, reading, math, science, computer literacy, Spanish and study skills.

According to Jon Stein, VUB advisor and school certifying official, in 2011 approximately 515 veterans attended MCTC. "With the Veterans Upward Bound program running strong for all of these years, and an increase in the overall student veteran population utilizing their GI Bill benefits, we have one of the largest student veteran populations in all of MnSCU striving to reach their educational goals."

VUB helps veterans like Tyler La Roue transition from military life to an academic mindset. La Roue enlisted in the Air Force after the attacks of September 11, 2001, and served for eight years. "I decided to get involved with the program because I knew if I wanted to be successful as a college student, I would need to get up to college speed and reintroduce myself to the education environment," he said. "VUB is a good place for veterans to accomplish this."

Located on the second floor of MCTC's Helland Center, VUB holds classes Monday through Thursday, providing study supplies free of charge to veterans and offering career counseling, enrollment assistance, financial aid counseling, GED preparation and one-on-one tutoring. Joy Wise, Director of Veterans Upward Bound said "With a large student veteran population, either in VUB or otherwise, we constantly strive to help each student to meet the challenges they face so they can move forward and acquire the education they deserve."

There will be a Veterans Day event sponsored by the MCTC Student Veterans of America (SVA) in the T-skyway on Thursday, Nov. 15 from 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. which will feature a panel discussing various topics concerning veterans.
