How to Sign Up

You'll need to make selections in Employee Self Service for basic medical and dental coverage within your first 35 days of employment. In most cases, coverage is effective following a 35 calendar day waiting period. You must also enroll in the family medical or dental coverage, flexible spending accounts, or long-term disability (if eligible) within your first 35 days or wait until the next Open Enrollment period (yearly in the fall).

Limited amounts of employee and spouse life insurance, child life insurance, and the short-term disability coverage may also be applied for within your first 35 days of employment without providing evidence of good health.

Medical and Dental Insurance

Insurance-eligible employees are covered through the Minnesota Advantage Health Plan, which is a part of the State Employee Group Insurance Program (SEGIP). Newly hired eligible employees will receive information from Minnesota Management Budget (MMB) via postal mail and will have 35 days to elect benefits. Coverage will not start until the 36th day of employment.

Life Insurance

The amount of basic or manager's life insurance is determined by the bargaining agreement or plan that covers your job, and is based on the amount of your annual salary. In addition to your basic or manager's life, you may have elected to enroll in additional employee, spouse, or child life insurance.

The State pays the full cost of basic group term life insurance for employees who are eligible for either the full or partial employer contribution for health/dental coverage. The amount of basic life coverage is determined by the collective bargaining agreement or plan that covers your job, and is based on the amount of your annual salary.

If your job is covered by the Managerial Plan, Medical Specialist Addendum of the Commissioner's Plan, or the MnSCU Administrators Personnel Plan, the State offers an employer paid managerial life insurance benefit equal to 1.5 or 2 times your annual salary instead of basic life coverage. Check your personnel plan to determine the amount of your state-paid life insurance and your eligibility for employer-paid coverage

To elect Spouse Life Insurance, you must complete the “Application for Optional Coverage” and submit to SEGIP. You may add up to 10,000 without evidence of good health if you apply within 30 days of the marriage. Any amount over 10,000 or after 30 days of a life changing event will require a satisfactory evidence of good health and this may involve completing a health questionnaire sent to you by SEGIP, and may possibly require access to medical records, or a physical exam. You will be notified if the coverage has been approved or denied.

You may purchase life insurance providing $10,000 of coverage for your insurance-eligible children or grandchildren. One child life insurance policy covers all of your eligible dependent children. Coverage for newborns begins on the 15th day after birth. You may add child life insurance without evidence of good health within 30 days of the birth of a child or the placement of a child for adoption.

Optional plans to protect your income and assets are available to most benefits eligible employees:

  • Short-Term Disability (STD)
  • Long-Term Disability (LTD)
  • Long term disability and special basic life coverage are combined for employees covered by the Manager's Plan and certain employees covered in the Commissioner's Plan. These combined benefits are called the Income Protection Plan (IPP)
