Services

Our program provides holistic student services that address the academic, social and personal needs of our students. Therefore, we offer a wide variety of services and activities. Click on any category below to find out more about these exciting opportunities.

Advising

Your advisor is available to answer most any question or concern that you may have. She is here to help smooth the way so that you can keep your focus on your education.

Academic Advising

Your advisor is available to you with registration by suggesting courses, course sections, and course loads. Mid-semester progress reports are reviewed with your advisor and in some cases, steps for improvement/assistance are suggested. Your advisor is also available to guide you through course withdrawal decisions.

Career Advising

Your advisor can help you explore options for careers and majors that are best for you. You advisor will guide you to assessments and resources, and you can participate in our career workshops.

Financial Aid Advising

While your advisor is not independently wealthy or one with her hands in the pockets of someone who is, she has some pretty good ideas about how to fund your education. She can direct you to government aid programs, private scholarship programs and to loan programs. Your advisor will guide you through the paperwork or direct you to someone who can.

Personal Advising

Your advisor provides referral and advocacy for additional services provided by other college programs and outside agencies.

Aids to Learning

We hope you are at school to learn and we want you to succeed. You are welcome to use any of the aids to learning that we provide. You may use them as much as you would like, though we do ask that you are also considerate of other Starting Point students. When used wisely, the resources will greatly improve your performance here at MCTC.

Activities

All activities are free to Starting Point students.

Starting Point is more than just studying. Balancing life is an important part of success, and we work to provide opportunities to help you achieve that balance. Every student in Starting Point is encouraged to participate in as many activities as he/she are able. Check out this semester’s events at our calendar of events.

Cultural Activities

Welcome Party - We believe in starting the school year off with a bang! Make your own ice cream sundae, play fun games, meet other great students and start your year on a sweet note.

"Celebrate Success" Luncheon - At the end of the school year, we celebrate the successes of our students with a luncheon accompanied by speeches, photos, and great food. This is an opportunities to recognize graduates, transfer students, student leaders, and to celebrate together one last time.

Cultural Events - We take advantage of the rich culture in the Twin Cities and believe it is important to experience a bit of it. Join us for a mix of events: at the theater, dining out, bowling, enjoying a museum or even cheering at a sporting event.

Educational Activities

College Campus Tours - Each semester, we offer tours to college campuses around the state. Find out what the atmosphere is like on other campuses, how much it costs, and what you need to do to transfer. It's a great break from MCTC and a chance to see how others study!

Workshops – Join us for short workshops on a variety of topics. Eat some snacks and learn with other students about transferring, careers, scholarships, leadership and much more.

Leadership Opportunities

Starting Point Peer Mentors – Starting Point’s Peer Mentors are successful students who help new students feel comfortable at MCTC and are available to chat. Join the team!

Outreach Activities

Volunteer! - Join other Starting Point students and participate in volunteer opportunities. Take time and give something back to the community.

For information about any of these activities, please contact Kris Leveille, H.2403, (612) 659-6561, or email her.
