What do I do if I am unable to print?
  • Check if your printer is out of paper, there is a paper jam in the printer, it is out of toner, or there is some other maintenance issue.
  • If it is a personal printer, try shutting it down and re-starting.
  • If it is a network printer, make sure you are logged into the network. If you are still experiencing problems, email the Help Desk to report the issue or call 612-659-6600 for urgent assistance.
How do I avoid Pop-ups and secure my browser?
Adware (software that displays ads) and Spyware (software that captures your personal information to direct ads at you or worse) are two major threats to safe browsing in addition to Spam, Viruses and Worms. Adware/Spyware cause pop-ups, browser redirection, and monitoring of your web access. Your computer may display some common symptoms of spyware like slow performance, new icons appearing on your desktop or taskbar, or certain keys failing to work in your browser. Avoid unintentionally installing spyware by doing the following:
  • Close the pop-up windows by clicking on the "X" icon in the titlebar instead of a "close" link within the window. Don't click anything within the window of a pop-up.
  • Choose "no" when asked unexpected, or close the dialog box by clicking the "X" icon in the titlebar.
  • Don't download programs from sites you don't trust, and realize that you may be exposing your computer to spyware by downloading some of these programs.
  • Don't follow email links claiming to offer anti-spyware software.
  • Adjust your browser preferences to limit pop-up windows and cookies to reduce or prevent scripting or active content. You can also adjust your privacy settings to only allow cookies for the web site you are visiting.
  • Check your security settings in Internet Explorer: choose Tools, Internet Options, click the Security tab, select the Internet zone, and confirm that the 'Security level' slider is set to Medium. This setting instructs IE to block the controls that aren't signed with a certificate, and to prompt you for approval before launching ActiveX controls. You can also set the slider to High, but you'll then have to add "Trusted" sites as needed. Similar security settings are available in other browsers.

What are some good Email practices?
  • Do not open attachments immediately unless you are expecting them, even if the sender is known to you. You can verify that the attachment is not a virus or worm by asking the sender about it through a separate email. Many viruses and worms hijack your address list and send out emails pretending to be you.
  • Avoid sending attachments if you can instead point to a web address or a shared network folder containing the content. This improves email performance.
  • Avoid forwarding junk mail that you get, especially if the writer suggests you forward it. These emails may include free advice, product offers, or some interesting story. If you want to share that information with your contacts, do so by creating a new email and re-entering the information.
What do I do when my phone's display is not working properly?
Try rebooting the phone by disconnecting and reconnecting the electrical power at the wall outlet or power strip. If the problem persists or reoccurs, please call the ITS Help Desk at 612-659-6600 for further assistance.
Why is my computer running slow?
There are many reasons for poor performance including malicious applications such as spyware, viruses or worms, running too many applications, etc.
  • If this is a personal computer, please contact the vendor from whom you purchased the computer.
  • If the computer belongs to MCTC, please email the Help Desk to report the issue or call 612-659-6600 for urgent assistance.
Where do I find my student email address?
Your email address uses a format similar to Abcd0001@stu.minneapolis.edu, where "Abcd" are the first four letters of your last name. To access your email account, go to the MCTC home page and click the "LOGIN" button to log into your MCTC intranet with your 8-digit MCTC ID and PIN.
