Kirk E. Washington Jr.Kirk E. Washington Jr. was a proud graduate of Minneapolis Community & Technical College receiving his A.S. in Community Development in 2015. A longtime resident of North Minneapolis, Kirk served as a creative catalyst for MCTC students, faculty and staff to more deeply engage with urban communities facing barriers to access in higher education and the arts.

This memorial scholarship fund has been created in his honor and is designed to keep his legacy of creativity, academic scholarship and community empowerment alive and growing.

Scholarship details

Applicants will be assessed for their growth mindset potential. A growth mindset allows individuals to believe that most abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishments.

All Kirk E. Washington Promise Scholars will also complete a Strengths Assessment through the MCTC Career Services Center. Promise Scholars will be part of a special student cohort with an advisor and qualify for work student opportunities in their field of study. Additional support will provided by North Point Health & Wellness Center and the Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ)—key MCTC partners.

Eligibility requirements

  • A current North Minneapolis resident
  • Accepted to MCTC and meet criteria to apply for federal financial aid (FAFSA). Apply at fafsa.ed.gov (FAFSA must be complete and on file with the MCTC Financial Aid Office)
  • Eligible with a family adjusted gross income cap of $75,000 a year. Preference is given to students with the greatest need and those with proof of progress toward graduation.
  • Enrolled full-time (12 credits per semester) in a career/academic pathway program
  • At least 21 years of age provided other eligibility requirements are met
  • Currently not enrolled in another post-secondary institution in previous 12-months
  • Able to maintain a minimum of 2.0 cumulative grade point average
  • Able to complete academic program within three years
  • Complete and report 20 hours of community service each semester as students
