E-Journals

  • Bad Subjects: Political Education for Everyday Life
    This collaborative web 'zine aims to revitalize a progressive politics in retreat by encouraging people to think about the political dimensions of everyday life. Online since 1994, each issue is thematically organized around a topic. You can also join the Bad Subjects discussion list, a space for readers to comment on progressive issues, and some interesting links.
  • BWZ: The Online Better World Magazine
    Better World is a combination online 'zine, the Better World 'Zine (BWZ), and a Web site collective, the Better World site. They are integrated together to provide depth, and designed to give free and useful information to help people make informed, responsible decisions about the way they interact with the environment and the community. BWZ features informative articles by award-winning journalists, a cover story, and information in four feature article areas, in addition to regular departments.
  • Disgruntled
    DISGRUNTLED is an online magazine that combines news, feature, satire and commentary about the darker side of the world of work.
  • EarthFirst Journal
    An independent periodical published eight times a year on the pagan holidays which includes: information and update on Earth First! campaigns, news and announcements, reviews and critiques of the environmental movement and reviews of interest to ecologists.   • Free Radical: A Chronicle of the New Unrest
    An online column on the current upsurge in activism written by L.A. Kauffman, appears every three or four weeks. Her work has appeared in the Village Voice, The Nation, The Progressive, Spin, Mother Jones, Salon.com, and numerous other publications.
  • Impact Press
    A nonprofit, bi-monthly, socio-political magazine that features aggressive journalism, biting commentary and a healthy dose of satire.
  • Oasis
    Oasis is the online magazine for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth. Each monthly online issue includes news and feature stories written by and about queer youth. Also include a directory of Oasis writers.
  • Postmodern Culture
    Published jointly by North Carolina State University, Oxford University Press and UVA's Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities. The web site includes full text of the current issue and back issues.
  • Rachel's Environmental Weekly
    A weekly online newsletter published by the Environmental Research Foundation. (MCTC Library subscribes to Rachel's)
  • Red & Black Revolution
    An anarchist theory and history magazine produced in Ireland. Publishes regular analysis of struggles and campaigns taking place in Ireland alongside news and reports from the international anarchist movement.
  • Radical Pedagogy
    An interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal devoted to the analysis of contemporary teaching and learning. Contains full-text articles.
  • Social Anarchism Online
    An online journal that promotes community self-reliance, direct participation in political decision-making, respect for nature, and nonviolent paths to peace and justice.
  • Utne Reader
    A magazine devoted to reviewing the alternative press. In addition to articles the Utne website includes discussion salons and links to other alternative resources.
  • Z Magazine
    Z is an independent political magazine of critical thinking on political, cultural, social, and economic life in the United States. The full-text of Z is available from 1997 onwards. The MCTC owns the print edition of Z since 1988.

Economics

  • ParEcon: Participatory Econmics Project
    Participatory economics (or parecon for short) is the name of a type of economy proposed as a desirable alternative to contemporary capitalism. The "authors" of this vision are Michael Albert and Robin Hahnel. The underlying values that parecon seeks to implement are: equity, solidarity, diversity, and participatory self management. The site is well organized and very complete.
  • United for a Fair Economy
    A national, independent, nonpartisan organization that puts a spotlight on the dangers of growing income, wage and wealth inequality in the United States and coordinates action to reduce the gap. Provides popular education resources, conducts research, and supports creative and legislative action to reduce inequality.

  • Biodemocracy
    Biodemocracy is a public interest organization dedicated to building a healthy, safe, and sustainable system of food production and consumption. It is a global clearinghouse for information and grassroots technical assistance.

    The Earth Liberation Front is an international underground movement consisting of autonomous groups of people who carry out direct action according to the E.L.F. guidelines.

    Information and resources from a leading environmental action group.
  • Pesticide Action Network
    Has campaigned to replace pesticides with ecologically sound alternatives since 1982. Links over 100 affiliated health, consumer, labor, environment, progressive agriculture and public interest groups in Canada, Mexico and the U.S. with thousands of supporters worldwide.

    An alternative to the beauty and glamour web sites and magazines targeting young women. The teen and senior editors and teen correspondents are the driving force of blue jean online. This coalition of diverse young women is dedicated to publishing what young women are thinking, saying, and doing. blue jean online profiles girls and women who are changing the world!
  • Center for Reproductive Law and Policy
    A non-profit legal and policy advocacy organization dedicated to promoting women's reproductive rights. CRLP's domestic and international programs engage in litigation, policy analysis, legal research, and public education seeking to achieve women's equality in society and ensure that all women have access to appropriate and freely chosen reproductive health services.
  • Feminist Majority
    Provides access to current issues and campaigns, book reviews, and research of feminist issues.
  • Feminist Theory
    Provides research materials and information for students, activists, and scholars interested in women's conditions and struggles around the world.
