Legislative and government relations

Public support for Minneapolis Community and Technical College is an important investment in our future. The students who graduate from our College become the business owners, teachers, nurses, carpenters, police officers, lab technicians, computer programmers, social workers and accountants that help all of us succeed and grow as a community.

Past public investments in education have clearly paid off in Minnesota, with state funding historically leading the way. In recent years, state spending per student has significantly declined in actual dollars. Today, MCTC receives 47 percent of funding for its operating budget from state sources, and 53 percent from other tuition and grants.

In addition to funds for operating support, MCTC receives funding from the state for capital requests. In 2006, we are pleased to report that we received legislative approval of $18.9 million for our Science and Allied Health Center renovation and $350,000 to design the new co-located law enforcement center with Metropolitan State University, which will be located on the Brooklyn Park campus of Hennepin Technical College.

MCTC also advocates at the local, county and federal levels for legislation and funding. To help support our advocacy efforts and learn more, please contact Reede Webster.
