Philosophy of the Learning Center
Our philosophy in the Learning Center is based on our beliefs
and values about students and learning. It is expressed as we work
toward our goals.
We believe:
- All individuals can learn to learn more effectively.
- Developing confidence enhances learning.
- People need to feel comfortable and safe in order to learn.
- Becoming active learners will foster independence in learning.
- People benefit from a variety of tutoring situations, such as individual, small group, shorter, and longer sessions.
- Learning is a life long process.
- It is never too late to learn!
We value:
- The rich diversity of ages, cultural, social, language, and religious backgrounds of our students, faculty, and staff at MCTC.
- Learning new ideas, approaches, theories, and new ways of using creativity—we are excited about learning.
- Working together to solve problems, assist each other, and provide support.
Our goals are:
- to help students develop confidence.
- to encourage active learning.
- to foster independence.
- to guide students in developing a variety of ways to learn more effectively in school and on the job.
- to model flexibility in learning and tutoring.
- to collaborate with students, other tutors, faculty, and staff;
- to work without judging others, accepting them and making them feel comfortable and competent.
