Library Information Technology

MCTC's Library Information Technology (LIT) Program will equip you with the practical and conceptual skills needed to work in highly automated libraries and information agencies. The Certificates in Public and Technical Information Services are offered entirely online. The library science and the liberal arts coursework for the Associate in Science degree is offered online, while the three remaining non-library program courses can be taken on campus at MCTC or transferred in from another college. View the A.S. Degree and Certificate requirements and the Information Studies course descriptions which make up the core of the A.S. degree and certificates.

The LIT program will cover automated library circulation, acquisitions, serials and cataloging systems and computer applications unique to the industry. You will be trained to design user-friendly Web pages and effectively search online databases and the Internet. You will also learn about ethical and legal issues related to information use and production, and skills for critical thinking and moral reasoning.

The A.S. Degree is designed for persons seeking careers as library paraprofessionals and for anyone wishing to transfer elsewhere for a bachelor's degree. The certificate programs are designed primarily for those already working in libraries who seek additional training (or those who may already have a college degree and wish to work in libraries).

All of the Information Studies classes that comprise the two Certificates and the core of the A.S. degree are offered in an online only format. The certificates are fully online programs. The A.S. degree can be taken as a primarily online program if students choose from the online liberal arts classes offered through MCTC to fulfill their general education requirements for the degree. Currently the only classes in the degree program that are not offered online are CSCI 1050: Designing Web Page, CSCI 1200: Computer Applications in Home and Business, and BUSN: 1155: Human Relations and Team Building. However, equivalent classes can be taken at another community college or university and transferred to MCTC.

If you live in Minneapolis or St. Paul or the inner suburbs you should plan to come to MCTC to meet with a counselor or advisor to complete the admissions process. If you live outside the Twin Cities you will need to follow the admissions process for distance students. To learn how to apply to and be admitted into the Library Information Technology follow go to the Prospective Students page.
