Screenwriting

MCTC's Screenwriting Program will help you develop your own creative resources so you can write exciting and original scripts even under the toughest deadlines. You will learn how to develop, write, analyze and effectively rewrite screenplays of all kinds, including those for television, documentaries and advertising. You will master how to combine powerful images with innovative dialogue in order to narrate your most exciting stories.

By the time you complete the seven levels of the screenwriting sequence, you will be able to address all issues related to narrative and non-narrative screenwriting.

The program provides an interactive learning environment where you will share your ideas and your scripts and get feedback in a workshop setting. You will meet one-on-one with your instructor to get detailed input and direction to write scripts that will capture the attention of your audience. You will also have the opportunity to work with local writers and producers and even pitch your work to known professionals from Los Angeles and New York. MCTC has an articulation agreement with Metropolitan State University.

NOTE: Students should seek advice from counselors and faculty regarding appropriate sequencing of required coursework for degree completion.

Can I get a BA or an MFA in Screenwriting?
Our AS in Screenwriting being recognized everywhere in the country, an MCTC graduate could pursue a BA in the Twin Cities (at Metro State) or elsewhere for a BFA, an MA, or an MFA in some of the most recognized universities in USA. Many of our graduates are currently at NYU, USC or UCLA.
What about ownership and copyright of my developed scripts ?
You are the ultimate owner of your copyright through any screenplay you developed during your studies at MCTC. However, you are required to credit the MCTC Film and Video Division in any of your projects. We encourage you to seek grants, competitions, placement or direct sales of your screenplays as part of our ongoing efforts to connect you with the real world in Hollywood or in New York. Any proceeds are definitely yours!
A very personal event happened to me or to a relative. May I develop it into a full-fledged script through the courses?
Definitely! Actually we encourage deeply personal projects to be developed under the supervision of your instructor.
I already have some experience in Screenwriting. Can I get credit for it and start the degree at some higher level?
Program faculty will review your academic records and work samples, and may request a personal interview before making a recommendation to the dean who makes the final decision.
