Business Management
Business Management Website
MCTC's Business Management Program will provide you with a broad background in the functional areas of business, such as accounting, management, marketing, leadership, and small business development so you can either continue your studies at the baccalaureate level or find entry-level employment in the field.
The accounting courses offered through the program will teach you to read and understand financial statements and prepare accounting statements for small to medium-sized organizations.
In additional courses you will learn oral and written business communication skills, the basic legal aspects of business, dispute resolution, marketing strategies, and how to evaluate an organization's strengths and weaknesses.
The program will prepare you to serve as managers of business, government and non-profit organizations using the four basic management functions: planning, organizing, leading and controlling. You will put all of your knowledge to work in a final case analysis that will be evaluated by program faculty.
MCTC has an articulation agreement with Metropolitan State University and most MnSCU institutions. Metropolitan State actually offers its complete bachelor of science degree in business administration on the MCTC campus.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I enroll in the Business Management Program?
- There are no special admission requirements to enroll into the Business Management Program or any of its courses. If you have met the admission requirements of the college, you may enroll into any BUSN course.
- What is the difference between technical business courses and transfer business courses?
- Technical courses are specifically designed for students seeking immediate employment. These courses teach the necessary skills needed for specific jobs. In the business-related programs at MCTC, these programs use the course prefixes of ACCT and BTEC. Transfer business courses are designed for students who wish to transfer into a business Bachelor of Science degree program after leaving MCTC. These courses also teach skills for immediate employment, but the primary goal is to satisfy the transfer requirements of the receiving institutions. Transfer courses use the BUSN prefix.
- Which business programs are technical and which are transfer?
- Technical business programs include the Accounting Clerk and the Accounting Technician programs. The coursework in these programs use the ACCT courses prefix. The Administrative Assistant program uses the BTEC course prefix. The only business transfer program is the Business Management program, which uses the BUSN prefix.
- What's the difference between BUSN accounting and ACCT accounting courses?
- Again, accounting courses with the ACCT prefix are solely for the technical accounting programs. Accounting courses with the BUSN prefix are the only accounting courses that will transfer to public Minnesota State universities.
- Is there any special sequence to taking Business Management program courses?
- There is no prescribed order that you must follow to complete this program. It is recommended that you begin by taking Introduction to Business. It's also a good idea to start Financial Accounting during the Fall semester.
- What kind of annual night class schedule can full-time working students expect from the business department and the college?
- It is the goal of the Business Management program to offer every course at least once per year both day and night. If enrollments in elective courses are too low, the low enrollment course may be offered only a night. It is also possible to complete all of the other general education (liberal arts) requirements at night.
- Do BUSN courses transfer to other colleges and universities in Minnesota? How about the University of Minnesota?
- Since there are so many public and private colleges and universities in Minnesota, it's difficult to make a blanket statement regarding transfer. Generally, most schools accept the business management courses. For example, the U of MN's Bachelor of Applied Business program requires the MCTC program for admission. However, the Carlson School of Management at the U of M will only accept the accounting courses. Metropolitan State University teaches its bachelor's program on the MCTC campus and requires students to complete most of the MCTC business program before admission. Our best advice is to check with the specific transfer institution.
- Where do most of the MCTC Business Management graduates go to college to complete their bachelor's degree?
- The answer is as varied as our students are. Students who attended MCTC are now attending: University of Minnesota - Bachelor of Applied Business program, Augsburg, University of St. Thomas, Concordia's CSAL (accelerated) program, North Central College, Minnesota State, St. Cloud State, and Metropolitan State Universities. Metropolitan State offers its full Bachelor's degree in Business on the MCTC campus.
