About the play
The time is 1905 in New York City, where Esther, a black seamstress, lives in a boarding house for women and sews intimate apparel for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes. In Intimate Apparel, the award winning dramatist, Lynn Nottage, has created a play in which opposing passions collide: love collides with lust, lies with truth, saving with squandering, black with white, dreams with reality. What emerges is a deep humanity seldom seen on this or any stage.
