What services does the library offer?
All faculty and staff may use the library to check out books and to access online databases. You will need an MCTC ID to check materials out of the library.
The library provides access to an extensive list of online resources, including: newspaper, magazine, and academic journal articles, art image collections, streaming audio music collections, and extensive encyclopedia collections. Reference Service is available for assistance with research questions related to class assignments.
Other services you or your students may want to use include: a unique zine collection, media viewing rooms, wifi access, self-service photocopiers, research computers located near the Reference Services Desk, plus a 40-seat computer lab housed within the library. The library home page has links to our hours and policies, as well as library resources.

Can I schedule a librarian to come and speak to my class?
The MCTC library has a somewhat different approach to library and research instruction than many other colleges, and we do not offer the traditional "Intro to the library" sessions that many instructors are used to seeing. Instead, the library has a very strong credit-bearing teaching program, and most of your students should be encouraged to take INFS 1000, as soon as they are ready. INFS 1000 is a 2-credit, semester-long introduction to the fundamentals of college research. It is a graduation requirement for the Associate of Arts degree, and is required for students within their first 24 credits at MCTC.
Information Literacy Course Materials
We work with instructors to locate resources that will meet your students’ research needs; and we work on a “train-the-trainer” approach to ensure that all faculty are aware of and comfortable with the use of library resources. If your course has a strong research component, you may want to request a Research QuickStart coursepage to highlight targeted resources for your class. We encourage faculty who have any questions about the use of library resources to meet with a library liaison for assistance. The liaisons are:
Jane Jurgens (liaison for Social Sciences, English, ADEV; Phone: x6287, Email)
Kathleen Daniels (liaison for Science, Nursing/Health, Education, English, Arts, ADEV; Phone: x6285, Email)
Tom Eland (liaison for Humanities, Women’s Studies, ACES, English; Phone x6286, Email)
Amanda Mills (liaison for English; Phone x4053, Email)
Ginny Heinrich (liaison for Tech Programs; Phone x6296, Email)

How do I put materials for my classes on reserve?
Fill out the Request for Materials to be Placed on Library Reserve form, and bring it, along with the materials, to the circulation desk of the library. You can request that items be on reserve for one semester or for one academic year at a time; at the end of that period you will need to review your materials and notify the library if you want to re-submit them for another year.
Materials may be limited to in-library use only (2-hour loan) or you may allow materials out of the library for overnight, 48-hour, or 1 week loan periods. If you have questions regarding reserve material, please contact the circulation department at 612-659-6290, email.

How do I request materials that the MCTC library does not own?
There are two answers to this question; one is to request the material through InterLibrary Loan, and the other is to request that the library purchase the material. InterLibrary Loan (ILL) requests are best suited for access to materials (in particular, books and journal articles) that are likely to be a one-time, fairly short term need. If you do not have a faculty ID with a barcode on the back, or one of the older faculty library cards we used to make, (which will also have the barcode), contact the circulation department at 612-659-6290 or by email for your system ID.
Materials that would supplement or support an MCTC course or assignment, especially those that would be used frequently, are good candidates for a request to purchase. Note that the library does not purchase required texts for classes. Contact one of the collection development librarians, Julie Setnosky (most curriculum areas; Phone: 612-659-6292, Email) or Kathleen Daniels (Health Science/Nursing and Education; Phone: 612-659-6285, Email.) All purchase requests depend on available funds and competing needs.
