MCTC Foundation Scholarships

The MCTC Foundation awards numerous scholarships each year to students in need as well as to students with high academic potential. During the 2010-2011 school year, the MCTC Foundation awarded over $387,000 to 291 students. Scholarship information for the 2012-2013 school year is now available. Please refer to the scholarship packet to see available scholarship opportunities.

The scholarship application deadline is May 25, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. in T.2500.

Apparel Technologies

Program description

In the Apparel Technologies program, you will receive extensive hands-on training in design, manufacturing, alteration and fitting by industry-experienced instructors and gain a sense of personal accomplishment. The program is the only one of its kind in the upper Midwest and will teach you to produce finished, professional garments from pattern to final product.

Program start and location

New students are admitted into the Apparel Technologies program in the fall and spring semesters. Courses are taught on MCTC’s main campus.

Apparel Technology Diploma—32 Credits
Apparel Technologies Advanced Certificate—14 Credits

What you will learn

  • Apparel design skills using both traditional patternmaking and computer-aided design methods, development and grading.
  • How to use standard industry software to automate the design process.
  • You will become comfortable with industrial sewing methods, product development and the sewn-goods manufacturing process.
  • You will gain valuable techniques in alteration and an understanding of proper garment fit and proportion.

Occupational outlook

Minnesota has a vibrant fashion and theater scene in which to find work after you graduate, along with jobs apparel industry jobs in the corporate sector. The Department of Labor suggests that the need for upholsterers will increase slightly through 2018.

Beyond-the-classroom opportunities

The downtown Minneapolis campus is on a bus line close to theatre districts as well as local and international corporations from the apparel industry for potential employment opportunities. You also may choose to join The Apparel Technologies and Services Association that fosters networks among the apparel technology students, alumni, community and local industry. Activities have included a student supported fashion show where original designs have been showcased, industry-based guest speakers and student trips abroad.
