Special Initiatives

MCTC's Student Success Initiative

As a college community, MCTC has always placed emphasis on helping our students succeed. Each of us has stories of how we’ve witnessed students overcome significant barriers and then go on to graduate and continue as successful citizens. However, as an institution of higher learning, we have not always been intentionally focused on the clearest measures of student success—graduating from MCTC with a degree, diploma or certificate, or transferring to a four-year college or university to complete a bachelor’s degree. In fact, MCTC’s graduation rates are not competitive with its national urban peers.

Last year, MCTC organized internal and external taskforces to focus on exactly that—improving student success rates through a planful and strategic process. Members of our business and alumni communities, nonprofit and educational leaders, and other experts met regularly to strategize ways to improve the graduation rates of our students. These taskforces, as well as other research and input, resulted in MCTC’s Strategic Initiatives for 2011-2015. Overall, MCTC’s goals are to:

  • Double the graduation rate for first-time, full-time students by 2015.
  • Achieve graduation rates at or above our urban national peers by 2015.
