Classes that typically begin at 5 p.m. or later on Tuesday, Feb. 7, are cancelled due to Minnesota precinct caucuses and State statute that requires colleges to cancel evening classes. Other college offices and services (Library, Computer Labs, Learning Center) will maintain regular operating hours.

Apply as a Transfer Student

Follow this application process if you have taken courses at another college and want to transfer to MCTC to complete a degree, diploma or certificate. If you are just taking a course or two for transfer to another school, you will need to complete the non-degree seeking admissions process. If you need help, contact us.

Application steps

  1. Apply online.
  2. Pay the $20 nonrefundable application fee. Please pay with your credit or debit card online at the end of the online application so your application process will not be delayed. You can also give a check to Business Services by mail or in person.
  3. Send previous college transcripts if you want transfer credits, financial aid or veteran’s benefits.
  4.  Study for and take the College’s placement tests or request a testing exemption.
  5. Wait for a letter about your admissions status. If you are applying to a career or technical program, you will receive a separate communication about admission to the program.
  6. Complete transfer student orientation (see below) and register for classes.

Note: If you have been suspended from another college for academic or disciplinary reasons, click here. If you have a financial hold at a previous college or university, you wll not be able to enroll in the college until the past due balance has been resolved.

Sending previous transcripts

If you plan to transfer credits into the college, receive financial aid or receive veteran's benefits, you must submit official copies of transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended to the Registrar at MCTC, regardless of your academic standing or completion of courses.

The Registrar can electronically access a transcript from a college or university in the MnSCU System. If you have an unpaid balance, you must pay it before we can access your transcript.

For other U.S. colleges or vocational schools, arrange to have an official transcript sent to the Registrar at MCTC. Ask your former college to also send you an unofficial transcript with your name and the name of the college to use when seeking exemptions from testing or prerequisites.

Placement test requirements

Many courses have requirements for prerequisite courses or placement-test scores. As a transfer student, you can meet these requirements three ways.

  • Take MCTC’s Accuplacer placement tests.
  • Provide copies of Accuplacer test results from another college.
  • Request a testing exemption based on completing college courses that show you meet the reading, writing or math requirements. Submit the form and an unofficial copy of your transcript to Admissions. See an admissions advisor if you need help with this process. The nursing program requires the reading placement test regardless of previous college courses or degrees.

Transfer student orientation

You must complete the transfer orientation process before you can register for classes. If you have 16 or more prior college credits and a GPA (grade point average) of 2.0 or higher, you can meet this requirement by submitting the Orientation Worksheet for Transfer Students to Admissions. If not, you must attend the regular new student orientation and registration. You may also choose to go to the regular orientation if you want help choosing or registering for your classes.

Transferring credits

The Office of the Registrar determines which credits are accepted by the college. The number of credits accepted will be recorded on your MCTC transcript. Grades do not transfer.

You can see which credits are likely to transfer through the Minnesota Course Applicability System. Learn about the system and credit transfer.

Find out which completed courses will transfer into your degree program by accessing your Degree Audit Report (DARS).

If you want transfer credit for courses taken at colleges outside the U.S., you must have them evaluated by an outside agency. If the transcript is not in English, it must be translated by the evaluation agency or you must provide a certified, literal translation. We recommend the following agencies:
