Midwest Solar Training Network

MCTC has been selected as a Partnering Institution with the Midwest Solar Training Network (MSTN). The MSTN is a group of technical and community colleges, non-profit organizations, universities and industry partners who are working together to build solar training capacity in the Midwest. Their goal is to increase the adoption of solar technologies in the market and to create sustainable jobs within the solar installation industry. They are funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and led by the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA).

As a Partnering Institution, MCTC will have the opportunity to discover and use the models, materials and expertise of the MREA (through the MSTN) to strengthen the College's solar training capacities. The MSTN will be partnering with 28 schools and organizations throughout the Midwest region (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin).

MCTC will receive:

  • Assistance with the development of a Solar Training Plan
  • Funds (training stipends) to support instructor development and program advancement
  • Access to all products and services available through the MSTN Solar Program Development Pathways including technical training, curriculum development and sharing, installation experience, training lab design and installation, PV Site Assessment Certificate Program and assistance in identifying industry mentors/apprenticeships/internships
  • Access to all products and services available through the Solar Instructor Training Network (SITN)
  • Regional recognition through the MSTN website and newsletter
  • Invitation to participate in MSTN advisory meetings, conferences and professional development webinars

MCTC has agreed to:

  • Develop and follow a Solar Training Plan created with support from the MREA
  • Pursue industry-recognized professional credentialing for instructors involved in delivering solar training
  • Align coursework to industry approved job task analysis
  • Select a representative to participate in the MSTN Advisory Board
  • Interface with local workforce boards to help place graduates within the industry
  • Work with MREA staff to provide data on instructors, courses and students as outlined in the SITN evaluation metrics
