MCTC Foundation to Host Power of Giving Fundraising Luncheon

The Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) Foundation will host its 2016 Power of Giving Fundraising Luncheon in mid May. This inspiring and powerful event showcases the College, the work of the Foundation and most importantly, the success of some amazing students who were able to achieve their dream of a higher education, in part, due to the support of the Foundation.

In addition to sharing the success of our students, the luncheon will offer the community an opportunity to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Power of YOU. Power of YOU is an innovative program that allows students to attend college tuition-free, while providing advising and counseling services to help them be successful in their education.

“Power of YOU was the stepping stone I needed to accomplish my dreams of achieving a bachelor’s degree,” said Korey Southerland, former MCTC Power of YOU student. “Now those dreams have extended further to earning a Ph.D. I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunities that the Power of YOU program made possible.”

In addition to supporting the cost of college, Power of YOU provides advisors to assist students in developing an academic plan, seminars and workshops to empower students to develop critical thinking skills, opportunities for students to engage with peers, faculty and professional staff, volunteer opportunities and thoughtful support services that help ease the transition to college. The MCTC Foundation assisted in the development of the Power of YOU and has provided financial support to help ensure students enrolled in the program are given every opportunity to achieve success.

“The Foundation is committed to removing barriers to higher education by providing scholarships and other support to students who face financial hardships,”  said Foundation Executive Director, Mike Christenson. “We provide opportunities, large and small, to allow our students to realize their dream of college.”

In addition to supporting important programs like Power of YOU, the Foundation is a leader in addressing issues of affordability and access to higher education, and has assisted the College and its partners in raising the visibility of these issues to public policy leaders. MCTC Foundation also provides invaluable support to the community through a variety of special initiatives that support students, enhance the readiness of our workforce and support the College in its strategic needs.
