Human Rights and Culture Presentations

In commemorating its thirty-fifth year of existence, the University of Minnesota’s Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program will be participating in its annual presentation series at MCTC. The public is invited to hear six different speakers cover the topics of human rights and culture. The speakers have a wide variety of professional experience in the topics that pertain to human rights and culture.

Oct. 21 – Human Rights and Culture in Colombia and Sri Lanka

Shiran Gooneratne

• High Court Judge in the Republic of Sri Lanka
• Experience with court cases related to trafficking offenses
• Master’s degrees in Commercial Law and International Relations


Marcela Sanchez-Buitrago

Marcela Sanchez-Buitrago

• Executive Director of Colombia Diversa, a non-profit organization that works to promote and defend the rights of LGBTI community members in Bogotá, Colombia
• Works to combat discrimination and raise awareness of the LGBTI rights
• Focus is on community mobilization techniques and community organizing

Oct. 30—Human Rights and Culture in Maldives and Morocco

• Principal Inspector in the General Police Forces Administration of Rabat, Morocco
• Work is dedicated to building and maintaining contact with the media, police investigations based on accusations in the media, and internal documentation of police appearances in the media
• English Literature degree

• Director of Advocacy of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives
• Organizes awareness and advocacy programs that pertain to various vulnerable groups, such as women and children
• Master’s degree in Communication Management

• Child Protection Officer at the Child Protection and Gender Unit of UNICEF-Balochistan in Pakistan
• Responsible for the implementation of children’s and women’s protection initiatives
• Bachelor’s degree in Commerce



Vanessa Fusco

Vanessa Fusco

• Prosecutor and Coordinator of the Training Group on Cybercrime in the Attorney General’s Office of the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil
• Has attended many conferences on cybercrime and associated issues
• Master’s in Criminal Science, Bachelor’s/Doctorate in Law
