MCTC Choirs Present Spring Concert
MCTC’s annual spring choral concert features world premiere
May 3, 7:30 p.m.
Whitney Fine Arts Theatre
1424 Yale Place
At its annual spring choral concert on May 3, the MCTC Choirs will perform works from an array of musical genres across the world. The MCTC Choirs are accustomed to singing songs in many languages and many different styles, but it is rare that they have the chance to perform a brand new work. At their concert May 3, they will have the opportunity to do just that.
In addition to the choirs’ typical blend of music from cultures across the world, the Vocal Ensemble will present the world premiere of “A Glimmering Girl” by award winning composer David Evan Thomas. Thomas composed this piece specifically for the Vocal Ensemble, using poetry by William Butler Yeats for the text. The MCTC Vocal Ensemble, which has had the opportunity to rehearse side by side with the composer in the preparation of this new work, is an auditioned group that performs works from across the globe in a variety of musical styles—from music of the Western Art tradition to folk music to bossa nova.
The choirs will be joined at this event by special guests Thomas Reimer, percussionist, and Julie Johnson, flutist. Children are welcome to attend. Admission to this concert is free, but the choirs ask that you bring a non-perishable food donation that you may deposit in the marked bins outside the theater. Food donations will go to the Hennepin County Emergency Food Network. A reception in the Whitney Fine Arts lobby will immediately follow the concert, and light refreshments will be served. This event is sponsored by the MCTC Music department and Student Life. Click here for a flyer.
